Not the best, but a good game in its own right.
The Suikoden series has always been an excellent series with a vast and varied cast of recruitable characters, and a plot that leaves you coming back for more. Suikoden IV, placing you in the shoes of a Gaian knight trainee named Lazlo (canonically, but you can choose his name ingame), continues this tradition. The big change, however, is the emphasis on ship travel and naval combat, as your home base is a gigantic ship and the game takes place in an island chain. Although the slow ship movement from island to island, the drop down from four characters in an active battle party from the six enjoyed in the first three entries, and the high (even by this series' standards) random encounter rate detract from the game's status in the Suikoden series, it's still a thoroughly enjoyable game in its own right.

Decent game, some things could be far better.
I've been a fan of the Suikoden series since the release of the original. This game attempts to take slight detours from the mainframe of the series. One big change implemented is the Four person party system. Though they allow for multiple parties while aboard your ship (which we will get to later), it just takes away that feel that the games have had before. Now, the ship has many things that could have been better, such as the way it controls. To make a long story short, you find yourself traveling by a rather slow clunky ship which will shoot the other way if you don't hit your landings just right, up until the point you recruit your teleporter, whom any fans of the series will know. The story aspect of this game is as per usual very good if you can get through the voice acting at times, and the war battle system can be very fun, though downright easy once you know it well enough. Overall, I'd say that this game does rank 5th of 5 in the main series, the order going as so: 2,5,1,3,4. But even though it falls short of the rest, it's a solid RPG and I'd still recommend it to any fans of the series or genre.
