Product Details:

An expansive fantasy world influenced by historical and traditional Japanese elements. This new franchise casts players in the role of the demon-fighting warrior, known as a Slayer. Starting from the Utakata Village headquarters where they will accept quests, players will venture out to battle monstrous and deadly Oni (demons) before they destroy all of humanity. Players can select party members from a supporting cast of characters, or join together with up to three other players through ad-hoc mode.

Since ancient times, a clandestine group has fought to keep the world safe from supernatural beings known as Oni. Calling themselves the Slayers, they have protected mankind from within the shadows of history for the past 1,000 years. However, a prolonged age of peace was suddenly ended by a mighty catastrophe. The land cracked, time was warped beyond all recognition, and the borders between the human world and the Otherworld, home of the Oni, became blurred. During this time, vast hordes of Oni made their way from the Otherworld to this world.

With much of the land under the control of the Oni, the Slayers gathered together the survivors in various villages across the land in order to make their stand. For seven days and seven nights, a short but violent conflict raged and after it was over, mankind was barely able to maintain a hold on their territory. This event later became known as the Awakening. Ever since the tragic events of that week, the Slayers have emerged from the shadows to become the protectors of humanity in the new age.

Slash, Thrust, and Crush!

Powerful targeted destruction system actions

Some Oni are massive creatures that can be several times the size of a human being. It takes more than just regular attacks to defeat these opponents, and Slayers need to slash, thrust or crush the body parts of the Oni in order to destroy them. Players can skillfully use weapons such as a sword or bow to work together with their allies and take down the Oni.

Mitama - the Souls of Japanese Historical Heroes

Use the power of the Mitama to slay the powerful Oni!

Mitama are the souls of fallen heroes that are released upon defeating an Oni, and players can use them to imbue their weapons with special abilities and attributes. Various effects can be obtained from these Mitama, and by upgrading their weapons, players can utilize multiple Mitama at the same time to choose the ones that best suit their playing style and strategy. Additionally, with more than 200 Mitama in total, each with their own artwork and in-game voices, there is plenty of incentive to try and collect them all.

An Original World that Blends Historical Japan with Fantasy Elements!

A grand historical fantasy

The story takes place in a world in which the power of the Oni has warped time and space. Within Utakata Village, on the front line in the war against the Oni, the player takes on the role of a new recruit of an organization known as the Slayers that serves to eradicate the Oni menace. The player must venture forth into a variety of battlefields, each of which is representative of a warped version of an era from Japanese history, from the early Asuka period to the closing days of the Tokugawa shogunate. This game focuses on Tecmo Koei's forte by mixing "Japanese" and "historical" elements to form a unique and vibrant world.

An Eclectic Cast of Allies for the Main Character

Hunting action for up to 4 players!

Joining the player is a group of veteran Slayers within Utakata Village that have fought against the Oni for some time. The stories of these Slayers, such as Ōka, who possesses unmatched fighting ability with a sword, will be told as they fight alongside the player.

Sword - Attack Technique: Slash

This weapon is easy to handle and features a good balance of swift, wide-ranging and powerful attacks. A variety of fighting styles can be utilized by using techniques such as the "Twisting Slash," which enables attacks while avoiding those of the enemies, or the "Vacuum Slash," which unleashes a powerful shockwave.

Gauntlets - Attack Technique: Crush

The weight of these weapons means that the gap between attacks is long, but their strength more than makes up for it. Landing a "Fire Hook" attack on a body part will cause it to be engulfed in flames and any damage inflicted on that body part will be increased.

Chain & Sickle - Attack Technique: Slash/Crush

A weapon that features Slash attacks from the sickle as well as Crush attacks with the flail, making it a versatile weapon that can perform a variety of attacks against targets that are both close up and far away.

Bow - Attack Technique: Thrust

This is the only weapon capable of attacking targets from long distances. For normal attacks, the longer it is held, the more powerful it will be. By combining it with the "Quick Nock" option which can offer three different types of attacks, it is useful against smaller Oni as well as larger ones.

Knives - Attack Technique: Slash/Thrust

Holding these knives in each hand enables rapid attacks which make up for the smaller amount of damage inflicted. They can be used both in the air and on the ground, and since there are multiple options to attack from the air, it provides for fighting styles that take elevation into account.

Spear - Attack Technique: Thrust/Crush

Focusing on mid-ranged thrusting attacks, it enables users to keep a distance while fighting. It can also perform Crush attacks by swinging the shaft around the user's surrounding area. Each of its attacks can increase their attack strength by building up power before the blow, and since the charge time is short, it is a good choice for performing multiple powerful attacks.

Battle System

The souls of more than 200 notable heroes from Japanese history to appear in the game as Mitama. By affixing these Mitama and their unique abilities to weapons, special Skills can be unlocked. Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Successor I like the Monster Hunter games but I always felt like it was lacking something. Whatever it was, Toukiden has. Whether it was the people actually speaking a language, a story, other characters beside the player doing something, or a sense of urgency. Toukiden is a great game for fans of the MH series who need something new in the formula. Some would recommend Soul Sacrifice but I can't recommend any game that ignores the actions of the player despite the box asking "what would you sacrifice for ultimate power?" Toukiden has a strong story, strong characters that actually try to stay alive on the field (compared to Soul Sacrifice where your allies just run into the charging monster repeatedly and being killed every time), fun weapons, and it's visually appealing. Also, there's a sense of urgency with this game that makes you feel like you need to succeed or everyone will be killed. If there is one flaw with this game it's that it's too Japanese. Hear me out, I have a hard time seeing a direct sequel to this game when the music, weapons, armor, monsters and practically everything else is very Japanese. It they create a sequel it would have to be a spiritual sequel taking place somewhere else due to how limiting Toukiden is by only including that one culture.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome I loved monster hunter for my psp. This game is by far in my opinion a lot better. A must have for any Vita owner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I play Toukiden almost everyday. I loved Monster Hunter, but Nintendo paid out to Capcom and the Vita probably will not get another Monster hunter for a long time. Toukiden is really addictive, and actually has a few mechanics that add on to that formula that gives the series a lot of potential. The Mitama-system gives boosts and special abilities during missions, there are six different weapon classes, there are multiple special moves for each of those weapons, and d@mn it is nice to have a second analog stick. No more claw hand. This game is great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This is an awesome game. Think of Monster Hunter, then add the fighting style of Dynasty Warriors and a much faster game experience. Add to it a fantastic weapon and armors system and you get Toukiden. You get your items from killing and finding stuff. You don't have to carry pick axes and climb everywhere to find your items to make stuff. This is a great game and should have been on the PS3 as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must Have Fighting Game! Alright I have been playing this game since I got it yesterday and it is AWESOME! If you have every played Monster Hunters it has a very similar set up, but is not exactly the same. Toukiden takes place in an alternate pass Japan where Oni/Demons are overrunning the place, unlike Monster Hunters there abundance anywhere is not normal. It is your job as a Slayer to fight them and defend the village and its allies. As seen in the description of the game you have a choice of weapons, but like Monster Hunters you are allowed to switch so feel free to explore them all and you can buy and create new weapons and armor as well as upgrade both. The major differences for Monster Hunter fans is the Mitama/spirits of fallen Heroes for extra moves, including healing, instead of items. Different Spirits have different moves so customize your character to your hearts content. The other difference is that your are not always doing solo missions. The game includes a cast of characters with their own weapons and abilities that will be either assigned with you to a mission or whom you can choose to join you. All in all the game is amazing with its customization options and set up. The graphics are awesome and smooth and the controls are easy to use. Their is plenty to do so lasting appeal is high and as for replay, well you can redo missions, and you should, and there are so many spirits and weapons to work with that it will be a very long game especially when you take in the online play into account as well. In conclusion it is Sony's new Monster Hunter since they went Nintendo and it is a must have fighting game for the PS Vita.
