Guild Wars Complete Collection
Can be convoluted, but still an excellent MMO
Guild Wars Complete includes every campaign released for this formidable and massive RPG: Prophecies (the original core release), Factions, Nightfall, and the expansion Eye Of The North. For those unfamiliar with GW, it's a medieval online RPG where you create a character for player versus player (referred to as PvP) or player versus environment (PvE). As I'm not much of a PvP player, this review will be mostly for PvE--where you join up to quest with other players to complete the main campaign story.
I could go on forever on the specifics of each campaign, but to keep it short: Prophecies takes place in a European / South American type environment, Factions is equivalent to China, Nightfall is inspired by Africa / Arabia, and Eye Of The North is akin to Russia and other northern continents. Unfortunately, you can only play as a human character--there are no other playable races in GW (you'll have to wait until GW 2 for that)...but there are enough options available to help your online avatar look unique. You'll choose one of 10 professions, along with a secondary profession--which allows for an endless possibility of skill sets.
As with any MMO, the learning curve can be a burden. To truly grasp what your chosen profession is capable of, you'll need to spend a tremendous amount of time looking over skills and how to squeeze them into your strategy--but that's part of the fun of this game. Be warned: Guild Wars highly encourages co-op play--if you choose to go it alone you'll have to fill out your 8 man team with computer-controlled heroes that aren't nearly as effective as real players (and outfitting them with equipment and runes can get to be REALLY expensive). And regardless of how you choose to play, make sure to implement the Necromancer and Ritualist classes in your team (trust me, you'll see).
There are a few snags you should be aware of before you dive into this game, though. First of all, the in-game economy is quite annoying...as merchant prices are based on player demand. Don't count on being able to afford coloring your armor set black, for instance...unless you have an insane amount of gold to spare. Also, the interface and explanations of some skills, weapon features, and rune allocation is VERY confusing at first. If you are more used to console-based JRPGs, you'll be in for a head-spin.
Guild Wars does require that you have an internet connection, but it's free to play--you'll never have to pay any monthly fees. The graphics are still quite sharp for a 2005-2007 release...and as long as you have patience, you''ll be able to learn the in-and-outs of the game and have a grand ol' time. Believe me, there's more than enough here to satisfy your RPG cravings until Guild Wars 2 arrives.
I believe this game is still amazing, even though its been out since 2005. Arenanet has kept updating the game and making it fun. They are working on Guild Wars 2 which you can earn rewards if you played these games.
