Sounds Like Blitzball
For those who played Final Fantasy X this kind of sounds like Blitzball in a way. Of course more themed towards football then the "handball" aspect of Blitzball, but nonetheless sounds like this could be fun.

Blood Bowl Comes to the USA
Based on the the table top game by Games Workshop, Blood Bowl combines American style football and the fantasy world of Warhammer. Build your own team and take them on the Road to the Blood Bowl Cup. You can play as Human, Orc, Dwarf, Elf, Chaos, Skaven, Goblin, and The Lizardmen. Each team has special skills and players. Their are two types of game modes, Blitz mode and Turn Based. In the Blitz mode the games is played in real time. In Turn Based mode the game is run like the table top game in 16 turns. The game stays true to the rules of the board game and the characters in the Blood Bowl Universe. Star players and all the skills are there. Take your team online and play against another team or use the friends list to find your friends team. Matchmaking takes a little extra time to set up but once your in the game is just like playing the board game. I seriously suggest that this year you take a break from the same old Football game and try Blood Bowl today!

I think
Heres what I think. Nintendo should really look into acquiring this liscense I think it would be a good game maybe put a bunch of mini games in it and have it compete with madden its possible its just gonna take alot. Its similiar to that game on the sega genasis called monster bowl or something like that. It was a good game and I see this in the same category I just see more potential then just the computer with this game.

Finally coming to the US!!
Blood Bowl is more then a Football Game. It is a football game where Orcs, Dwarves, Humans, Elves (and more!) try to win by scoring Touchdowns as well as injuring their opponents team. Knock down an opposing player and bribe the referee to look the other way while you stomp on the downed player! Blood Bowl has 2 game modes. The first is a Turn Based Game where you control each player on your team and move/attack with them seperately. Your opponent watches on and waits for his turn to do the same. This mode is a lot like the Table Top Board Game made famous by Games Workshop. The second game mode is a Real Time Game, this mode both you and your opponent control your team at the same time trying to out maneuver each other and score Touchdowns as well as injure each others team.
