Test Chamber - Watch Darth Vader Force Choke Us In The Star Wars Battlefront Beta

by Andrew Reiner

Star Wars fans likely have two dates memorized: November 17, the launch of Star Wars Battlefront, and December 18, the theatrical release of Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens. The countdown to both launches is made a little less painful today with the launch of the Star Wars Battlefront beta on PlayStation 4 and PC. We took a brief look at the two modes players can test out at this early time, and walked away mighty impressed by the classic trilogy vibe, and flow of combat.

We kick off our look with an 8 vs. 8 match on the planet Sullust. Tim Turi and I pass the controller on every death, and end up doing fairly well in this match. The next match we dive into is Walker Assault, Star Wars Battlefront's large 40-player mode with vehicle integration. We suit up as the Rebels and show off many of Battlefront's unique features, all while dying over and over again. Darth Vader even makes an unexpected appearance at one of our spawn points.

Battlefront is undeniably gorgeous. Whether you're running through the snowy trenches of Hoth or exploring the rocky canyons of Sullust, the details and lighting effects are among the most impressive I've witnessed on consoles.

Prior to jumping into the beta, I had my concerns about the experience DICE would deliver, but the gunplay and character navigation feel updated and smooth, whether you're using the first- or third-person views through the three modes in the beta.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not buy this game do not buy this game, this game is nothing like the previous battlefront games, no single player, multiplayer is the same maps over and over and hardly any players playing the multiplayer part of the game, it gets boring very quick. The only thing that was nice was the music and the graphics and none of the dlc is in the 40 player maps, and most 12 player maps are empty, save your money and get something better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reboot of old games This game is basically just a battlefield mod that looks like star wars.....Much like Hardline, better but still fairly the same and is fun to play but definetly not to pay full price for.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from The Truth.... This game has the potential to be a great game but honestly they messed it up. There is no single campaign, The weapons were ok and now they're awful because of the update. There are not enough characters in the game. Not enough maps. You will be at the max rank in no time. All I can say is the game is not finished and you can tell. I wouldn't recommend buying this game or even the DLC. I feel like I wasted 60 bucks. I say this because I'm a moderate gamer (I play on weekends when I have time ) and I've already maxed rank and got all the weapons and cards except 1 and I'm bored of playing the same maps using the same strategy to win and DLC hasn't even dropped yet. Sometimes you can't even play the game because you can't get a spot on the server or you're waiting for other players to join and that can take a long time. I had more fun with battlefield, C.O.D and Halo.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Terrible executin of a formerly popular title EA dropped the ball on this one, as they have with many titles of late. Do yourself a favor and just re-purchase Battlefront II and actually enjoy yourself. Especially if you expect Clones or Kylo Ren in this game.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from If you haven't been playing from Day 1 Dont Bother I was really excited to see what this game would finally end up like after the beta test weekend. I was kinda heart broken to see that it wasn't very different from the beta and the game feels just hollow and empty. There is absolutely no story mode and the solo play is just the regular missions with AI. I've found this game to be most frustrating in the fact that it feels so unbalanced. Now I'm not complaining about whether the Rebels are stronger then the Imperials, or vice versa. No my gripe is if you haven't been playing this game since day 1, you are absolutely useless. You're nothing but cannon fodder for those who have already invested 50 plus hours into this game. Everyone uses the same combination of the DT-21 and a jet pack. You get killed in one shot while you're pathetically blasting away with your blaster at enemies that just seem to never die. Why EA couldn't easily began scaling it or placing those maxed out players with those of equal level is beyond me. I watched a guy sit in an AT-AT and literally get 40 kills. FORTY! All in all this game is beautiful and the sound is amazing. Unfortunately its beyond unbalanced and has just been a let down. I'm actually kind of sad that I want my money back. Now trust me I have tried to level, but it's just so un-fun and disheartening to be a useless easy target for those players that use the same tricks over and over again. I know this was long winded but if there's anything to take away from it it's this. IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN PLAYING THIS GAME SINCE RELEASE, YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE A BAD TIME.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Needs Feels like it was released six months to a year too early just to coincide with the Force Awakens release. No bugs, just no real content And no single player mode, paid DLC... hating this trend...

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Awful This game is very disappointing! With all the hype, I would have expected much better game play; however, it’s not as smooth as I would like. The only real appeal about this game is the visual effects, sounds, and cut scenes. Take the nostalgia away from the game and the visual appeal the game is rated 2 stars. You are unable to create squads, teams, or any type of party in the game. The spawns are unacceptable as you can be spawn killed 20+ times before you are able to take your first step. The lack of choosing a server is awful and really dampens any hope for this game. If you like games like Battlefield or Call of Duty stick with those because they are better!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolutely Terrible This game is complete garbage. The only positive thing I can say about this game is the graphics and sound. As for everything else, I would have given it a 0 if I could. The gameplay I expected to be similar to that of Battlefield, being that both are EA games. The lasers from the blasters move slower than the bullets of Battlefield. How is that possible on any level of physics? That is a great question. Leading your shots is impossible to judge. The use of "cards" as perks was also a huge turn off point. Basically, once you max out in level and have saved up enough in game currency to buy the most expensive cards, you basically become unstoppable. It is impossible to enjoy this game at this point if you did not purchase it from day one. I do not joke when I say that maxing out in rank is the sure way to do well in any game mode. Teams are also consistently unbalanced. All the better players are put on one team, and the other team consists mostly of players who just purchased the game. Now before anyone says I am just not good at shooters, I want to clarify that I have been playing shooters since halo 2; and I have played almost everything from halo to COD to GoW to Battlefield, etc. And I have played both Battlefield and COD on PC and console, so I am very well accustomed to shooters and pick them up very quickly. I have been playing this game for 3 straight weeks now and I find that no matter how quickly I react or land my shots, I always lose the gunfight to a player with more expensive cards (perks). What makes this game so bad is that it is also lacking a single player story mode. Even a 2 hour length single player story mode would have made this game better. However, it is only online multiplayer, and a very sad excuse for one. If you love Star Wars as I do, then you will love the amount of work put in (the work that should have been put towards gameplay) to make it as nostalgic as possible. But if you are a gamer, this game is not worth the money or time. Stick to Battlefield, CS:GO, even COD is a first choice in comparison to this game.
