Q & A

Q: With your busy schedule, how do you stay in shape?

Living in NYC helps, because we walk everywhere. Winter was tough, I never wanted to leave my apartment! But luckily, there is a small gym in the building and I try to get cardio in at least three times a week. It helps being married to someone who is into staying in shape as well. We can motivate one another. And trying to eat locally grown food and cutting out most processed food has helped tremendously as well.

Q: Do you have a trainer?

When I found out I was pregnant, I got a trainer. It was important for me to keep in shape, but not hurt myself or the baby. This is the first time I have worked out with a trainer and it has been great.

Q: So between the trainer and your husband, you're pretty motivated?

Yes! For me, motivation was the hardest part when I didn't have a trainer. One thing that always helped me was including a friend or my husband in the workout. That way I couldn't wuss out, because someone else was depending on me to show up. Consistency is also hard for me. Once I get to where I feel like I look great, that's when I start to slack.

Q: In terms of fitness, what do you think the biggest advantage is for your age group?

The biggest advantage has to be how well I know myself now. Emotionally and physically. Being in my 30s, I realize how important my health is and how much easier life is when I remain active and engaged.

Q: Any disadvantages?

The biggest disadvantage is simply that I can't do everything I used to and bounce back quite as quickly. My metabolism is slower, that was a big wake-up call. Stretching, warming up and cooling down are major parts of my work out now, and they never were before.

Q: Are you blessed with great genes or is keeping fit a struggle?

Fitness has come pretty naturally. Ballet was my life for years, along with gymnastics, so I've always been active. Plus, I grew up in New York City, walking, walking, walking. And my mother was a single mom with a full-time job and was in school also, so I took tons of after-school classes.

Q: Speaking of your mom, how did she influence your fitness
regime today?

My mother never stops moving and doing. She leads by example. We had to run around just to keep up with her! When she wasn't working or in school, she was running a soup kitchen. One summer she took a class on building and re-wiring houses! She is a constant inspiration, and she happens to be beautiful!

Q: What is the best advice she gave you regarding health
and fitness?

Sunscreen. She never let me go anywhere without sunscreen. But she got that from my grandmother…

Q: Let's talk about some favorites: healthy food?

Bananas, walnuts, coconut water, Pirate Booty.

Q: Favorite indulgence food?

New York pizza, and Haagen Dazs ice cream -- any flavor!
