| What's Hot This Week: September 30 |
| September 30, 2008 at 9:54am |
Sub Zero and Batman have fun building
words that exist only in the Mortal Kombat realm.
You komplete us: the Mortal Kombat
Kollection.
This week, the hotness is about intentionally
misspelling words to give them more impact. Sure, playing "Mortal
Combat" would be just as fun, but calling it "Mortal Kombat" just
makes it that much kooler, as if the game is so revolutionary,
conventional spelling cannot accurately describe it. Of course, the
series has been around long enough to make "Kombat" a household
word, but we can't help but wonder whether the whole thing started
out as a typo, and they just ran with it.
Finish the Dude in the Cape!! For the first time ever, your favorite DC comics characters and a
slew of Mortal Kombat fighters will battle in
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, releasing November 10. We're really, really dating ourselves here, but seeing Sub-Zero and Batman facing off in
the promotional picture reminds us of an episode of The Electric Company, an educational
TV show from the 70s. One of their bits featured silhouettes of two
people facing each other and taking turns saying the first and
second part of two-syllable words. Then they'd say the word
together, resulting in simultaneous wacky fun and learning! We think
we smell another potential game here: Mortal Phoniks. But we digress
from the game at hand. Don't forget that you can get a Mortal Kombat vs. DC
Universe T-shirt when you reserve the regular edition for
Xbox 360
or
PS3.
Or you can reserve the Kollector's Edition for
Xbox 360 or
PS3
and get an Mortal Kombat vs. DC
Universe lithograph.
Komplete your Mortal Kombat Kollection Today: As the Mortal
Kombat series shuffles off to the next generation, you can replay
some of the fun on your PS2 with the
Mortal Kombat Kollection,
which begins shipping today. Komplete your kollection with
Mortal Kombat: Deception, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon and Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks
to bring maximum kharakters and karnage to your PS2.
We'll bring you another roundup of What's Hot, or possibly Whutz
Hawt, next week. |

Night Smackdown: Making a Grand Entrance |

Click on the picture to go to GameStop
Cinema for a look at interactive entrances and celebrations.
This Friday, we turn our attention to the Wii
version of
WWE Smackdown vs. RAW 2009,
partly because if you say "WWE" really fast, it sounds like "Wii,"
and partly because this new feature is so cool we just have to
mention it. We're not trying to exclude anyone. In fact, we'll tell
you about the latest talent roster announcements for every console
in a bit, but for now, the Wii takes the stage with Interactive Entrances & Victory Scenes.
Speaking of taking the stage, everybody knows a wrestling match
begins the moment the competitors step into the arena. That's when
they can work the crowd into a frenzy or intimidate their opponents.
Using your Wii Remote and Nunchuck, you'll be able to control the
entrance from the ramp, where you might high-five fans or rip
someone's sign in half, all the way to the ring, where you might
choose to leap onto the turnbuckles. Each superstar will have unique
pre-match actions. So you might salute the crowd with John Cena or
throw up the D-Generation X sign with Triple H. As far as we know,
however, you won't be able to dance around in an Uncle Sam hat while
a James Brown impersonator performs Living in America. But who
knows? Maybe Carl Weathers will show up on next week's roster
announcement.
Once you've tasted victory, the Wii will also allow you
to control the way you celebrate with Interactive Victory Scenes.
You can play to the crowd, attack the referee, shake your opponent's
hand, grab a folding chair and go to town on your fallen opponent,
and more. Because that's what draws us to wrestling in the first
place the fun that goes on before, during and after the match.
As promised, we'll throw a bone to owners of other consoles with
this week's roster announcement. You'll see superstars Mark Henry,
John Cena, Triple H, Undertaker, Chris Jericho and C.M. Punk
in the Xbox 360,
PS3,
Wii,
PS2 and
PSP
versions, and John Cena, Triple H, Undertaker, Chris Jericho and C.M.
Punk in the
DS version.
We'll bring you more exclusive news next Friday. In the meantime, check out
the new video on GameStop Cinema, and see the new screen shots on our product page for
WWE Smackdown vs. RAW 2009
for Wii.

| Red Wednesday #6:
The Empire of the Rising Sun Rises to Power |
| September 24, 2008 at 9:48am |
Click the picture to see the
inimitable George Takei comment on Command & Conquer Red
Alert 3.
Developers of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3
knew early on that they wanted to introduce Imperial Japan as a
third faction, but the real challenge was deciding exactly how to do
that, according to Mical Pedriana, who is responsible for writing
the character dialogue for Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3.
Because the Red Alert series explores
alternate timelines, the story can
go any direction, but it must be based in historical fact. Mical
explained, "The cool thing about Red Alert 3 is that we
have the advantage of this history that's been modified. We can take
something we've all seen, and then it gets exaggerated."
In the case of Imperial Japan, we see a strong empire that was ended
by the Allies in World War II. It's the job of Mical and his team to
explore what might have happened in a reality in which the Allies
did not step in and Japan's influence grew unabated in the South
Pacific. Mical told us his research into traditional Japan led to a
duality of the old and the new. "We tried to pump up the images that
people have of that culture. In the case of the Empire, we have a
combination of the archetypical ancient Japanese Zen mixed with the
super-high-tech image we all have with Japan today," he said.
So any good empire needs a powerful emperor one who represents that
duality of tradition and innovation one who may be a little
detached from the real world one who wants to do the rest of
the world a favor by allowing it to become part of the growing
empire. Mical told us that they were happy that George Takei agreed
to take on this role of Emperor Yoshira, who dresses in traditional
clothing while commanding robotic troops from his Zen garden. "He
has that voice that everybody knows," Mical said. "I heard his voice
as I was working on the script."
On the set, we were told that George Takei was hard-working and professional. He quickly caught on to the
dual nature of the story, having fun with the Sci-Fi part, and at times displaying his knowledge of Japanese history
by politely pointing out which objects on the Japanese set were actually Chinese.
To get a small peek at the finished product, as well as George
Takei's comments on playing the role, watch the
Empire of the Rising
Sun video
on our GameStop Cinema page. We'll bring
you more Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 news next Red Wednesday. |

We'll bring you another roundup of hot GameStop news next week. |
| Welcome to Friday
Night Smackdown |
| September 19, 2008 at 9:50am |
Here we see the extreme version of Red
Rover.
Okay, so it's Friday morning, but you can
read this again after sundown if you'd like. Join us every
Friday for the next few weeks as we celebrate all that is
WWE Smackdown vs. RAW 2009,
shipping November 9.
We'll bring you the latest features and enhancements for the
upcoming game, and we'll also bring you the latest on which
wrestlers will be filling out the roster.
The first feature we get to tell you about is the improved Tag
Team match. We're not sure how an event named after an innocent
child's playground game evolved into such a brutal spectacle, but it
probably began when somebody said, "You're it!" and the other guy
said, "No, I'm not!" Of course, most playground games usually
degenerate into a Lord of the Flies reenactment, anyway. At
least there's a referee in this version.
Some of the changes you'll notice in the Tag Team matches include new double-team
maneuvers, new tag-team finishers and a new Hot Tag Maneuver, which
enables the Illegal Tag Partner to build up power before being tagged, resulting in unleashing a world of hurt on
both opponents once the tag is made.
Also new to this version is an array of grapples and maneuvers the Illegal Tag Partner can
perform while waiting on the apron.
Players can make the partner walk up and down the apron,
and as if that isn't enough, they can also strike or grapple opponents from the
apron, distract the highly focused referee, complete a forced tag, or
perform a rope pull-down maneuver
to send an Irish-Whipped opponent over the ropes and onto the
outside floor. We thought an "Irish Whip" was like a fruit smoothie
with cream liqueur added, but we were told that it's actually a
wrestling move in which an opponent is spun into the ropes or a turnbuckle.
Our version sounds less painful.
We're also happy to be the first to announce some of the wrestling talent that will appear in
WWE Smackdown vs. RAW 2009. This week we've been informed that you'll see RAW legends Santino Marella
and Kofi Kingston, Smackdown wrestler Shelton Benjamin and ECW superstars Finlay, Beth Phoenix and Kelly Kelly
on the Xbox 360,
PS3,
Wii,
PS2 and
PSP
versions. The DS can't hold as much information, but you'll still see
Santino Marella, Finlay and Shelton Benjamin in the
DS version.
We'll bring you more exclusive news on features and talent next Friday. In the meantime, check out
the new video and screen shots on our
WWE Smackdown vs. RAW product pages.

| Red Wednesday #5:
It's a Scientific Fact Turning into a Bear is Cool |
| September 17, 2008 at 10:42am |
Click the way-cool Kossar's Helm above to see
a video of it in
action on our
GameStop Cinema page.
We've been enjoying the opportunity to
bring you insider news on Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 for the past
few weeks, and while this week's entry is still related to Command & Conquer: Red Alert
3, we're going to take a slight detour into the world of
Warhammer
Online: Age of Reckoning with a Red-Alert-flavored twist.
Because many of the people who enjoy playing Command & Conquer also
enjoy playing Warhammer, and vice-versa, our friends at EA have
thrown in a unique bonus item for Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning
with each copy of the PC versions of Command & Conquer Red Alert 3. For a limited time,
both the
Regular and
Premier Editions of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 will
contain instructions on how to unlock the exclusive Kossar's Helm, a Kislevian helmet with magical powers.
We asked Justin Webb, Senior Design Manager at Mythic Entertainment,
about these helms and he gave us some background history. The helms were rumored to belong to the deadly 77th Kislev Kossars Regiment,
also known as "The Dancing Bears." While "The Dancing Bears" sounds
about as intimidating as "The Cuddly Kittens," legend has it that
these warriors could transform into ferocious bears during battle,
and any dancing they did was a kazachok on top of an opponent's
head. Some historians believe that the transformation was due to the
enchanted power of runes etched into each Kossar's Helm. Although these Kossars were destroyed to a man at the
Siege of Praag,
their magical helms were never recovered. Who knew they'd end up in
your box for Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3?
Justin told us that it's all about bragging rights in Warhammer
Online: Age of Reckoning. He said the challenge of making an item
available at entry level is to find something that's just as cool at
level 40 as it is a level 1. The Kossar's Helm fits the bill nicely
with the look of a classic Russian ushanka. Plus, did we mention it
turns you into a 12-foot silver-furred bear? That's where the
ultimate bragging rights come into play. Although you'll turn back
to your original character if you attempt to engage in combat,
Justin summed up the cool factor nicely when he told us, "So if
you're chatting with someone [in the game] and they say, 'I just
killed 10 spiders,' you can say, 'Oh Yeah? I'm a freakin' bear!'" We
think that says it all. So why did they go to all that trouble?
Because it's just cool to be able to turn into a bear.
Remember, the only place you can obtain your Kossar's Helm is in the
PC version of
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3,
and supplies are
limited.
To see the transformation in action, watch the
Kossar's Helm video
on our GameStop Cinema page. It's far more impressive than we can
describe here. We'll bring
you more Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 news next Red Wednesday. |

Whether you prefer the cozy, padded ambiance
of Arkham Asylum or you'd like to explore an entire icy continent in

Batman: Arkham
Asylum. If you already look like the guy on the right, don't bother.

Knight DVD. You can see the official rules are here.
It's Good to be the Lich King: We received official word
yesterday that
World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King will
release November 13. This is a little more accurate than our
previous guess of "when full moon after the first frost."
By the way, the full moon in November is supposed to be on the 13th.
So we were pretty close. We also
received details about a
Wrath of the Lich King Collector's Edition,
which will contain World of Warcraft: The Wrath of the Lich King on
DVD-ROM; a 208-page book featuring never-before-seen images from the game;
an exclusive in-game pet: Frosty, the baby frost wyrm, who is
apparently brought to life by a magical hat; a behind-the-scenes DVD containing over an hour of developer interviews, the
Wrath of the Lich King intro cinematic with director’s commentary, and more;
the official soundtrack CD; a mouse pad featuring a map of the newly opened continent of Northrend;
and two World of Warcraft Trading Card Game March of the Legion starter decks, along with two exclusive cards available only in the Collector’s Edition.
All that loot is enough to make anyone feel like a king, although it
may reduce their odds of being wrathful. Reserve your copy now
because these are going fast.
So enter the
"A Life in Arkham" Sweepstakes by October 13, just
before the next full moon. And reserve your
World of Warcraft: Wrath
of the Lich King Collector's Edition right now. Don't bother to
check the phase of the moon or you'll miss out. We'll bring your
more waxing and waning news next week. |
| The Stars Were Out at our 2008 GameStop Conference |
| September 12, 2008 at 5:40pm |
Lupe Fiasco pulled volunteer Erin from
the audience to help him perform Superstar on Lips.
Ozzy Osborne addresses the crowd while
Mark McGrath tries to figure out what Ozzy's saying.
Although we hold the annual GameStop
Conference to see the latest developments in video games, you never
know who is going to make an appearance. This year's conference in
Las Vegas was no exception, as some stars dropped by to help pitch
some of the titles.
We mentioned Olympic gold medalist Shaun White a few days ago, who
was on hand to promote Shaun White Snowboarding. The next couple of
days held a few surprises, as Lupe Fiasco took the stage to perform
his hit Superstar, which is one of the tracks on the upcoming
Lips video game. He got a little help from a suspiciously
well-dressed and well-prepared "volunteer" pulled from the audience,
kind of like Courtney Cox in Bruce Spingsteen's Dancing in the Dark
video.
In another presentation, TV personality and former Sugar Ray lead
singer Mark McGrath gave us a peek at
Guitar Hero: World Tour before
he brought out Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker for a hot drum solo.
After Mark interviewed Travis about what it was like to be filmed
and digitally recreated for the game. He introduced the original
Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osborne, who brought the house down even
though nobody could understand what he was saying. But seriously, he
was quite coherent and congenial as he watched a group perform Crazy
Train on Guitar Hero: World Tour, and he even quipped, "That guy
sounds better than I did!" When Mark asked him what he thought of
being digitized for the game, he said it was "(very) cool."
Actually, he didn't say "very," but this is a family blog.
Later that night, some of our associates spotted Carrot Top at a Las
Vegas night club, but that doesn't count because he was already in
town doing a show. Some other GameStop associates thought they
spotted Carrot Top, but it turned out to be Shaun White again.
When it was all over, we had more fun, took
more pictures, and learned more about the industry than we could
possibly put in a blog entry, or at least more than we feel like
typing up on a Friday afternoon. We'll bring you some more pictures
from the conference next week. |
| Red Wednesday #4: The Evolution of Tanya |
| September 10, 2008 at 10:28am |
Jenny McCarthy portrays Tanya in Red Alert 3.
If you’ve been playing the Command & Conquer: Red Alert Series
for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed a few changes over the years. And if you haven’t,
you may want to make sure you didn’t accidentally put Red Aert 1 in your Red Alert 2 box. As any
good game evolves over time, due to technological advancements and deepening story lines, its
characters go through changes as well.
If you’ve checked out the Red Alert 3 videos on our product pages or on GameStop Cinema,
you’ve seen that the commando Tanya has undergone some changes of her own since the
first version. In fact, she bears a striking resemblance to Jenny McCarthy,
most likely because she is Jenny McCarthy, or more accurately, Jenny McCarthy is portraying
Tanya this time around.
You’ll remember that Lynne Litteer played Tanya in the first Red Alert installment,
while Kari Wuhrer, who will always hold a place in our hearts from the MTV game show Remote
Control, played her in Red Alert 3 and Red Alert 2: Yuri's revenge. We asked some of the folks
behind the development of Red Alert 3 about the process of Tanya’s evolution, and they told us
that it’s been a combination of timing, actor availability, character development and the success
of the franchise, largely due to the title’s popularity with gamers just like you, gentle reader.
In Red Alert 1, the feel of the game was designed to seem like you were picking up bits and
pieces of surveillance video, and when it was time to make the sequels, they decided to make
scenes with a more polished, cinematic quality to draw you deeper into the action. This enabled
them to have more fun with the scenes, and Kari was able to fill the role nicely.
In the Red Alert 2 series, widely recognizable actors began to take on some of the roles,
and with its success, Red Alert 3 features a mainstream actor in almost every role. When they heard
Jenny was available, producers were able to bring her in for a screen test. They weren’t sure if
Jenny would be able to portray the toughness necessary for Tanya, but they found that she was able
to nail that spitfire attitude necessary for Tanya and strike the delicate balance Red Alert treads
between a campy B-movie and a serious performance. After all, it’s all about the fun when you play
Red Alert, right?
So visit our GameStop Cinema page to get a first-hand look at how the beauty who could easily snap your
neck has changed over the series. We’ll give you the inside scoop on some more changes in next week’s
Red Wednesday post.

fight against the resurgence.
A Strange new world – Spore is Now Available: If you haven’t already,
pick up a copy of Spore and create your own life forms and guide
them from microorganism to advanced society that has mastered technologies
like space travel and the Clapper.
Another Place That Defies Reality: This week, we're in Las Vegas,
a place you couldn't dream up on Spore if you tried, at the annual GameStop
Store Conference, where we are gathered to get inside looks at the latest games and
celebrate the fact that we work for the “gamiest” place in the world. We can’t tell
you everything that goes on in our tightly guarded, double-top-secret meeting rooms,
but we will give you a few glimpses of the fun we’re having here, even though it’s
raining right now. Isn’t this place supposed to be a desert?
Look for our next update for Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 tomorrow in our next
installment of Red Wednesday and we’ll bring you some more pictures from the GameStop
Store Conference, provided that we don’t end up pawning the Marketing Department’s
camera to cover Keeno losses.

| Red Wednesday #3: Celebrating 13 Years
of C&C |
| September 3, 2008 at 9:50am |
Click the picture above to see our
GameStop Cinema video on the evolution of Red Alert.
Last Sunday the Command & Conquer franchise
marked its 13th birthday, and while most 13-year-olds
are experiencing awkward voice changes, blemishes and emotional
swings that make them generally unfit for society, the teenage C&C
marks its birthday with a new level of sophistication and mass
appeal with
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3.
We were able to spend a
few minutes with Louis Castle, co-founder of Westwood Studios, where
the C&C franchise was born.
Originally intended to have a war-game feel, as if the player had
hacked into a government's war-simulation computer, the game has evolved over time into an experience in which the
player is directly involved as a commander in real time, Castle told
us. "Our original vision for
the game began to develop its own identity after the first couple of
products," he said. Castle believes this evolution is due in part to
the development of improved technologies, the desire to explore
richer storylines and the development
of players themselves, many of whom who have grown up with the
franchise. "We're able to draw from more mature, sophisticated
storylines as gamers become more mature and sophisticated
themselves," he told us.
Command & Conquer branched off into three main groups, Tiberium
Wars, Generals and Red Alert. While the other two take themselves a
little more seriously, the Red Alert series allows for a more
whimsical look at history with a 50s drive-in movie vibe, Castle
told us. The story revolves around a parallel reality created when
Albert Einstein travels back in time to remove Adolph Hitler
from power. But with Hitler out of the picture, Joseph Stalin just
muscles his way in. "Although this is purely fiction, a substantial
amount of historical research goes into it," he said. "The political
climate in Europe at the time was ripe for an upheaval. So we
started thinking, if not
Hitler, who else would have stepped in?"
During World
War II, the climate was also ripe for research into alternative
technologies, such as teleportation, Tesla Death Rays, and other
elements of "weird science." Partly influenced by
their research and partly influenced by the fact that their studio
was not too far from a top-secret Air Force base, Castle said he and
his associates began to wonder what warfare might look like if some
of that weird science actually worked. This has resulted in some of
the fantastical war machines seen in the Red Alert Series.
So the combination of a curiosity about history, the changing needs
of gamers, and growing processing power has brought the franchise to
what we see today, with Red Alert 3 even making the leap from
the
traditional PC platform to the Xbox 360 console, as well. Castle
told us next-generation technology has allowed them to bring the
storyline to a whole new audience, one that may prefer incidental
playing to a marathon strategy session. While Castle said he is excited
to still be talking about C&C and games like it after 13
years, he looks forward to a future in which developers can continue
to evolve the art and continue to evolve the overall experience,
whether on PCs or consoles. To get a better feel for
how the Red Alert experience has changed over the years, check out the
Red
Alert Retrospective video on our GameStop Cinema page. To see

round up a couple of interesting "What's Hot" subjects for next week. Come back tomorrow for Red Wednesday,
when we'll show you a retrospective on Command & Conquer: Red
Alert. |
