The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time & Master Quest
Praised by many and...I'm not one of them.
The Legend of Zelda has been one of the most critically acclaimed gaming franchises throughout gaming history. If you need any more proof, look no further than Ocarina of Time. While the game was originally released for the Nintendo 64, it has been ported to other consoles as well. One of these ports was the Master Quest edition for the Gamecube. This version has the exact same game from 1998, plus a harder master quest mode, which is basically the same game but with a few changes to where if you played the original game, you will most likely be thrown off at points. Plus there are a few short films promoting some Gamecube games like Wind Waker and Metroid Prime. So far, this game sounds like an easy recommendation. The original game, an altered version, plus some extra short films. What seems to be holding me back? Well, let's take a look at Ocarina of Time. You play as Link (or your file name) who is sent on a quest to save the land of Hyrule from Ganondorf. In order to defeat Ganondorf, you'll need to travel back and forth time with your ocarina (ha ha ha) to get important items, get access to dungeons/temples, or complete certain objectives. Along with traveling through time, you'll need to enter dungeons and temples, solve all the puzzles and defeat the boss at the end to obtain magical jewelry to obtain the master sword and travel though time or wake up the sages to reach Ganondorf and defeat him. From what I've said so far, the story sounds rather uninteresting, but there are actually plenty of surprises along the way while you progress (IF you progress). I won't give out too much, but let's just say Zelda is not your typical "Princess Peach". Now here's where things become a little problematic here: the gameplay. When you play the game, you'll notice a pattern: Go to a dungeon/temple (take your pick), get a useful item for that dungeon you'll use later, beat the dungeon, go the next dungeon, and repeat. There are times where you'll need to do something differently like go back in time and get an item to beat that dungeon, but the pattern is still noticeable. To be fair, there are some optional things you can do to occupy your time, and they were amusing. My favorite one was the one where you try to catch the biggest fish. It was simple and the music and atmosphere was relaxing. However, when I played the game, I didn't feel like I was on a quest to save Hyrule, I felt like I was solving a bunch of puzzles and doing other stuff to beat this game. But my main issue with the game is the difficulty. Most of the time, I had no idea what to do most of the time. I was getting stuck a lot on certain puzzles that it drove me insane. It was so troubling that I needed help from my schoolmates in order to beat some obstacles. It was also irritating at times where to go next. There were times where I got lost and confused to the point where I went to an optional area, thinking it was required to go there or I would mess up the set path and go to areas that I shouldn't have gone too yet until I beat the dungeon I left. I remember just wanting to give up and bash the game mercilessly because of the lack of direction. Most of the time, it felt like I just got lucky when beating the game. A good example of that would be the horror known as the Water Temple. I actually stopped playing this game for a few months because of that area, and that zone alone is why I refuse to say this game is as good as everyone says it is. I did manage to beat it, but the scars still remain. To be fair, the combat isn't all that challenging. In fact, areas where you're in a room fighting against a mini boss is some of the most fun I've had with this game. Not that's out of the way, what about the controls? Well...there are some issues. First off, you can't jump on your own. You have to get close to an edge while moving and you should jump automatically. But if you move too slowly and jump off the edge, you won't jump as high, miss the ledge you wanted to get to, and possibly lose health from falling down too far. To be fair, you can jump on your own, but you can't jump straight forward on your own. Only back, right, and left. Also, when you're aiming with your hookshot or arrow, you don't feel as in control as you should. When you move left or right, the aim moves in half a second. You need to move the control stick VERY slowly for proper aim. To be fair, the controls overall are fine. The game uses the controller in very unique ways, like the camera stick to choose items or play the ocarina. Everything else like moving or controlling the camera is fine. The visuals in the game take away the feel of being this fictional world you're playing in. I understand this game was originally released in 1998 and I don't mind them not updating them, but my main issue is most of the character designs along with some backgrounds. With the exception of young and adult Link, young and adult Zelda, Sheik, Saria, young and adult Ruto, the young and adult gal who works in Lon Lon Ranch (forgot her name), the...last sage you wake before going to Ganondorf's castle, that fat owl, and those other two workers of Lon Lon Ranch (the ones who resemble the Mario brothers), the characters don't look too appealing and at times quite hideous (not including the old people) plus the backgrounds don't look too appealing. I don't feel like playing the game at times because I don't want to see the backgrounds. Complaining about the visuals may seem harsh, but it did affect my experience. The characters in this game don't ruin the game, but don't make the game stand out that much. The main characters like Link, Zelda, the sages, etc., don't have too much personality other than being sweet or evil. The only one that kind of stood out was Ruto, the Zora princess, since she was rather stubborn and a bit demanding. However, the minor characters like the Hyrule villagers for example are rather entertaining and give the game true personality. There are the uninteresting minor characters, but the ones that stand out are delightfully strange, pretty wacky, amusingly weak/idiotic, or just plain funny. The music in this game is actually rather very well executed. The variety of the music, whether calming, mystical, or even an adrenaline boost, there are at least plenty of tracks in the game to delight your ears. While the soundtrack doesn't want to make come back for more, it still should give you some delight. FINAL VERDICT: This game is a pure example of why you shouldn't jump on the bandwagon. Don't get me wrong, I definitely had some fun with this game, but I just couldn't see the charm of the game everyone says it has. If you like the Legend of Zelda games or likes a puzzle game that will truly make you think outside the box, then give this game a go. Anybody else who hasn't played this game. I'd say...you're not missing out a lot, but there is some value in this game. Just don't expect an easy time.
So much praise and...I don't fully understand why.

It earned high praise back then and still today. But is it really that good. Well...let's look at the story. Link (or whatever your file name is) must save Hyrule by going back and forth through time. Sounds lame? Well...it's that was a very brief summary. The story offers more complexity and surprises along the way. Overall, the story will keep you interested while you progress (if you can that is). The gameplay has a simple structure. Go to a certain area, solve the puzzles, and defeat the boss at the end. What makes it unique is that sometimes you need to go back and forth through time in order to obtain certain items or complete the areas. There are optional things you can do, and they can be entertaining. My favorite one was catching the biggest fish. The environment was nice and the game was simple enough for a good time. Overall, the gameplay, while not that desiring, should be able to have some fun here and there. The controls in the game are designed nicely using certain parts of the controller to its fullest advantage. Like the camera to use items or play the ocarina. Overall, don't worry about dying from control issues too much. The minor stuff like visuals and sound, in short, shouldn't bug you too much. Wait...I've been pretty nice towards this game, so why don't I consider this game to be as wonderful as everyone else thinks? Well I do have some problems. The minor ones are the controls, while I said before are fine, do have some problems. Like jumping. You can't jump by pressing a button. You jump by running towards a ledge and your character will jump automatically. When you're in air, you don't feel able to move as well, and the speed before you jump can throw you off if you're too slow. You won't reach the platform you wanted to get on, and you could get hurt by falling down to far. Also the controls for aiming your hookshot or arrows feel too stiff. When you move the control stick normally, the aim moves way too quickly. You need to move the control stick very slowly for an accurate aim. And the visuals, while not bad at the time (this game was originally released in 1998), a lot of the character designs aren't too pleasing. With the exception of Link (Or your file name), young and adult, Zelda, young and adult ,princess Ruto, young and adult, Saria, the...last sage, and Sheik, the designs of the characters look rather unappealing to say the least. It takes away the feel of being in this fictional world I'm playing in. But the main problem I had with this game was the difficulty. A good chunk of the time, I was frustrated with what I was supposed to do next. I couldn't solve this puzzle or get that one item. It drove me to insanity. The game hardly tells you what to do most of the time. There were times where I just wanted to give up and rip up on this game. I had to talk to my school mates to figure out certain puzzles. The game is too tricky. There were times where I was doing certain things that were just plain useless in the end. Like how far you dive below the water. I just got lucky when beating this game. Not to mention some areas are just plain ANNOYING (the blasted Water Temple). The Master Quest edition of this game isn't that harder compared to the original, but if you play the original, you will be thrown off at points. Final Verdict: This game just doesn't live up to the expectations everyone hyped it up to be. If you like the Legend of Zelda games or likes to think outside of the box, then give this game a try. Anyone else who hasn't played this game yet, I'd say don't worry. You're not missing out a lot at all.
One of a Kind: Past Present, and Future.
I love (not) the review a few below this one. "The graphics are bad" And he/she also gave a 1/10 on the sound of the game, Those are the people you can't trust with reviews. He or she doesn't seem to have the ability to read up on their games and realize when it originally came out. 1998? oh yeah, I can see why the graphics aren't 2012-like, and the sounds aren't the highest quality ever.. Back in 1998, this game was so revolutionary not only in graphics, but game play. I grew up on the Legend of Zelda. I remember Christmas time when I opened up a brand new Nintendo 64 with the Legend of Zelda: OoT. I dove straight into this immensely innovative game and even at four years old, could tell it was like no other game on the market. The bosses, each greatly different, throw the first time gamers for a loop. Hardcore gamers all appreciate the game as well; then even more with the release of Master Quest. The bosses are the same in Master Quest, but the temples are entirely changed. The only thing that comes to mind is upside down, inside out, and so different, that previous Legend of Zelda experience won't help as much as you may have been hoping. So if you're looking for a deep story, endless twists, and all around enjoyable game play, this is for you. I highly suggest that first time Zelda players start with the original Ocarina of Time, then Master Quest, so the patterns and ideas of the game are easier to spot out.

The best game of all time. Period.
When you start playing ocarina of time, you can immediately discover why it is labeled as the greatest game of all time. While the game starts off a little slow, the later temples and dungeons will continue to astound you with unique puzzles. The bosses in this game were also good, although some were a little easy. I would so recommend this game to anyone!
This game is not for serious gamers.
I think the graphics and gameplay of this game is very bland and boring. I was told this was the best game but I wasted my money. I recommend more modern zelda games for serious gamers.

The Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of Time & Master Quest is a very thrilling game for all who like to have lots of fun.With exciting gameplay, amazing graphics, and an remarkable storyline, this is easily my #1 video game of my top 10 video games.
I played this game everyday on the N64. I beat it somewhere around 70 times. Yeah, this game was pretty much my life. But now that i'm older i don't feel the same emotional connection with this game like i used to. But, i remember the amount of joy it brought me as a child. Which is the main reason i reminisce about it. I consider it to be my favorite game ever, and should be played by any Zelda fan.
This game is just spectacular! The only way to play the Master Quest with its original graphics is to buy this. You can get it on the 3DS version of Ocarina of Time, but there are updated graphics and the world is mirrored (like the GameCube and Wii versions of Twilight Princess). The regular game is very close to the version on Collectors Edition. Over all, it has great gameplay, challenge, replay value, and music. It should also be mentioned that Ocarina of Time is the highest rated game of all time.
