Dragon Ball Z: Sagas
One of the Worst Games tied to this License
Dragonball Z Saga is definitely one of the worst games to be attached to the series. The game features a broken camera, shoddy controls, terrible enemy AI, and ugly character designs. And, all of those problems on top of terrible gameplay basically cements this game as one of the worst that I've played in the last several years.
The gameplay is largely crippled by terrible controls. The game often takes time to respond to button presses which is terrible idea in a game with a lot of rapid button mashing. The game also features a lot of quirky design decisions like your character moving a lot slower if you are locked onto a target. This massive slow down essentially makes dodging impossible at close range because of how fast the energy attacks are. You'll largely move in to target a enemy then rapidly backflip to relative safety to pick off enemies at distance. It should also be noted that the locking system will only target the closest enemy and that it's impossible to switch targets even if the enemy you want to deal with is one that constantly spawns new units to fight.
The camera is also problematic in this game since you have no control over it. This means if it gets stuck behind a rock or something then you are royally screwed and will be forced to blindly move around to hopefully adjust it to something more manageable. The lack of camera controls also makes finding items on the map a bit more difficult as well since you can't look around for them effectively.
And speaking of a lack of effective control you'll also find the flying ability rather useless since you can never get higher then a few feet off the ground. You feel more like your hovering then flying to be honest and you'll sometimes need to go to a later part of a stage to climb up some rocks to perform a jump so you can then hover back to the beginning to get power-ups you couldn't reach previously since you can't gain any height while you fly.
The combat in this game is also broken since if you land an attack you can then proceed to pummel your opponent to death. As long as you never complete a punch or kick combo you can get an enemy essentially stuck in an infinite damage loop making all the fights extremely easy.
Though, if you try to avoid the easy route to winning fights you'll quickly become frustrated since many enemies deal massive damage, can easily block your attacks, and sometimes posses attacks that are impossible to cancel out without a perfectly timed ki blast and you'll still take damage since the only opening is after the attack was initiated.
While the attacks themselves are alright the character models are rather lackluster. They look alright from a distance, but terrible from up close.
The music is alright when the game is showing clips from the show to explain what is going on story wise, but the music from the actual game is rather weak.
There really isn't any lasting appeal to this game. You'll either beat it in five hours, take it back to Gamestop for a refund, or will shelve it and hope to forget about it. Though, if you aren't sick of this game after the first five hours you can unlock additional characters like Broly, Bardock, Yamcha, and Tien.
Lasting Appeal: 2
Overall: [2(3) + 3 + 6 + 2]/6 = 2.83
Not Worth It
The game might be only $7.99, but it is definitely not worth your time or your money. An average gamer will be able to complete this game in less than five hours without dying at all. I seriously suggest you don't play this game at all. It's horrible. If you're a DBZ Fan like I am, I'll list some better DBZ Games below.
This game has probably the shortest story of any anime based game. I beat this game in about 4 hours, which is terrible considering that this game is supposed to span from the beginning to the cell saga of DBZ. The gameplay is (for lack of a better word) stupid, you can beat this game (like me) in 4 hours mashing only the melee button and doing the necessary Q.T.E's. How is it that this game which was released 3 years after the 1st Budokai, looks so much worse. This game basically only has a story mode and the only replay value is playing through the story as different characters including side characters like Yamcha and Tien, and the only OP character Broly. However playing through the story again does not lead to anything different, all you do is play the exact same story but a little faster because you know what your doing and you have a stronger character. How is it that i live in a world where people can give THIS game a perfect score and yet gamecube games like Beyblade : super battle tournament and Megaman Battle Transmission get less than a 7 score?
This game is like super awesomeness! i love the way you fight and roam around looking for items and battling mini enemies. The way you fight is like a battle and item search. It's really cool. Only 2 minor complaints. I wish this game was longer ( goes up to cell), and I don't really like the fact that they don't have a tournament, or duel mode. So, if you're going to get this game, make sure you know that there is no duel mode. But there is a two player story mode. and the story mode is fun and very explanatory. GET THIS GAME NOW!!
