this game is a great mix of future robotic technology and super smash bros. type of fighting attacks. As my 2 friends and I played through the multiplayer we were awesomly suprised with new items or characters you could upgrade into. The controls are basic and easy to learn, but it still is somewhat tricky to use them. Throughout the game, as you earn more unlockables, the game increases its difficulty. It does so because the more weapons, such as lazers , and missiles , you unlock, the more powerful you become.Over all, my experience with this game has been great , and I can't wait untill i can play it again with my friends
Mixes adventure with battle awsome hybrid
One of the best games I ever played. Im realy bumed that the sequil is only avalible in japan. This game has a great story and the battle sequences are amazing. the best part is that you can customize your robo to fit your fighting style, hence the name I recomend this game to everyone. A ds version was released called custom robo arena a good game but the game cube version is superior. sorry if any mis spellings.
The Best Game EVER
When I looked at the back of the game, I read it and thought it was going to be a cool game. I was right. The beginning, middle, and end of the game were all fantastic. I had so much fun playing it. Plus, the controls are incredibly easy. And on top of that, there is so much you could do in this ridiculously awesome game; each with all kinds of fun things to do in them. There are 3 types of game modes, each with subordinate modes in those one modes. There is "Story Mode", "The Grand Battle", "Arcade Mode", and some more, too. I just recently finished beating this game (for the most part) and, man, was it fun. The graphics were great too, as well as the whole story line, and all of the characters (along with their personalities). While I was playing, I realized how cool it was to be able to control what your character is going to say. It is a great game for all of you aout there who like shooter (sort of), adventure, and action. To thiose who made this awesome, and fantastic game, I have one thing to say to you people. You guys are geniuses. And last of all, when I reached the end of the game, I wished so incredibly badly that the creators would make a sequal to this one of a kind game.
Good but has some flaws
This game is good and most of the time is fun but i have heard people i know complain it can be boring and repetitive, this is true but not to the level of not playing it to the end, i actrually played thrrough it a few times and enjoyed. It has some RPG elements like moving freely around the game world and the battles take place in an alternate screen, also you can greatly customize your "robo", hence the name custom robo, some parts are legs, body, guns, etc for example some legs are faster and jump higher, some guns have longer or broader range and you get the idea. When you enter the battlefield it plays a bit like a fighting game which is great if you are the kind of gamer that gets bored with turn based battles you run around and shoot. I have no complaints about the music or storyline whatsoever. It also has a multiplayer mode where you can battle other custom robos but i did not play it, oh and in story events in which the character you control and someone else fight against some other character the Computer controls the other robo and the AI is not that bad. So at a price this cheap its a good choice.
rivals fallout 3 and better than halo
an awsome game for gamecube and deserves a sequel more than almost any game ever posibly for wii xbox or best ps3 it would have graphics that would blow your mind away i wish i had another one of these games i prized it but used and played it too death
Awesome Robo game!
Allot of people say its hard to find a good Robo game...That is true. Until you play this, this is the BEST Robo game you'll play I almost guarantee it. The Customization is amazing. The Story is very fun there's so much to do the game is really good with allot of levels the gameplay is amazing the weapons are fun to play with there's some really huge ones. And this is good for all ages cause it's not violent (unless you count robots fighting). The game is allot like other Robo games except your character isn't the robot the robot is a "toy" your char gets its very weak in the beginning there isn't leveling really. But the game is fun I really don't no what else to say other than its fun the sound is amazing the graphics are good the controls are easy to learn and the challenge is amazingly hard as you go.
This game is amazing. I bought it because I just wanted a robot game, it had the best reviews, and the guy in the store said the intro video was awesome. This turned out to be one of my best purchases. While the amount of text in the beginning is a bit of a nuisance, the rest of the game makes up for that. The controls were very simple for me to master but mastering the game was a great challenge. One of my favorite parts of the game is that you can always find new parts for your Robo. The first time I played it, I just rushed through and realized at the end that I didn't have all the possible parts. So I played it through again and after uncovering all of the parts, the game became even more fun. There are so many possibilities to this game, I recommend it to anybody and everybody.
While the models look good, the story itself is enjoyable, and there is good customizability for your Robo fighters, what drags this game down into the gutter are glaring technical issues. For starters, the character models are stuck on the same facial expression. The developers tried to make up for this with expressive portraits, but that only works when the majority of shots are top-down. Second, the characters have such limited animation that they can't even make fists. Lastly, the generic "beeps" and "hoops" for language gets easily annoying. This game had great potential, but NOISE squandered it away with glaring technical issues. My advice, forget about this game and get the far superior successor Custom Robo Arena.
Custom Robo Review
The story itself feels rather standard, but the game does contain some interesting characters and plot elements. On the downside the pacing feels a bit weak since the game is so relatively short that the game can't deliver a proper build up and climax.
Gameplay wise this game uses a real-time combat system that has you and your opponent fight in arenas that are four meters squared. These arenas are littered with obstacles that offer cover as well as field traps. Sadly, the different arenas have a limited amount of impact on the parts you'll use in combat.
Though, on the plus side the game focuses on several rules when it comes to combat and favors making good use of your pods, bombs, and guns to trap your opponent and dole out heavy amounts of damage. The game also makes all of the guns, pods, and bombs operate in different ways so you'll want to explore your options and get a feel for all of them. You'll also want to consider that some of the guns, bombs, and pods operate differently depending on if you launch them with your feet on the ground or up in the air. You'll also want to keep in mind the basics of combat if you want to complete this game.
Another aspect to keep in mind is that the game allows for 2 on 2 battles and a few 3 on 1 battles during story mode. These battles can be highly chaotic and makes tracking were bombs and pods are at highly difficult. And, this brings up the only real flaw with the combat system in my opinion which is the camera. The camera stays back to get an overhead view, but when you are far away from your enemies or have a lot of characters on screen the camera can be so far back that it makes it difficult to see bombs and pods as they are being launched. This can put you at a serious disadvantage especially against some of the later enemies since they are highly resistant to damage but can dole out a massive amount of damage rather quickly.
Graphically the game is a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand the robot models themselves look rather nice with each of the parts having a distinct look and feel, but on the other hand the characters lack any animation and the game copies several character models ad nauseum.
Of course, to get around the character animations the game relies on pictures next to the text in order to dictate the emotions of those speaking. It's a commonly used technique in a lot of games and while it does work decently the massive amount of model copying in this game shows where all of the real effort went.
The soundtrack is alright. There isn't anything that truly stands out, but the selections felt appropriate for the atmosphere the game was going for at any given point in time. Though, sadly the game lacks any voice work and instead deploys a series of annoying beeps to indicate that people are talking. I guess, the best way to understand it is to think of how the adults speak in Charlie Brown and then multiply it by a factor of 10.
After you beat the main story mode you unlock a few additional modes to play as well as an epilogue. You can also have a lot of fun with this game in the form of multi-player, but that requires finding someone to play with. You can also experiment with parts and part combinations to better hone your style as well as improve your chances at winning in multi-player.
Lasting Appeal: 9
Armored core made easy
As my summary suggests Custom Robo is like Armored core in that you create your own robot but instead its really simple you just choose a robot and you choose a gun, a bomb, a pod, and boosters to use in battle. The story is alright it follows a nameless hero (you give him a name ) as he fights an evil syndicate and learns the truth about a monster that almost destroys the planet and has returned and finds out what happened to his father. Its not the most original but it works but the story doesnt stop when you beat the game you get another game that continues the story. The gameplay is pretty good its kinda like a fighting game but instead of punches and kicks you uses bullets and bombs, you customize your robo before battle and you can see who your opponent is and what the battlefield is to determine what parts to use. The variety of each robot and each part is welcome, each robot has unique strengths and weaknesses and the different stages help you incorporate them as such, but some of the guns are useless in battle. The visuals are okay the opening video looks great but the rest of the game doesnt look the same way which is confusing because they couldve used it for the game. The game as as a whole is good it could use some work but its great for those who liked armored core but dont like the over complicated layout.
