Zatchbell: Electric Arena 8 10 1 1

A Little Flawed in Terms of Combat ========= Story ========= Story mode seems to follow a few of the episodes from the show, but since I didn't watch the show all that much I can't really tell you what episodes were used or if they are even in order. The game ends with a battle between Zatch and Tia and a renewal of their promise to become a "kind" king if they manage to defeat everyone else. Since, I didn't watch the show the story mode sort of gave me whiplash since I couldn't completely follow it outside of the basic premise. You can skip the story cut scenes which are rather nicely drawn manga style cut-scenes by pressing the start button. Outside of this alienation do to my own lack of knowledge the story did seem to fit the characters based on what I've watched. ========= Gameplay ========= This is where the game runs into a major stumbling block. The combat in this game is rather dull. This is largely because of how simplistic the combat is. The game doesn't feature any combos and the magical attacks are the only decent way to damage your enemy. So you'll largely rely on charging your magical gauge by holding b and jumping around your enemy and allowing them to come to you so can unleash a slew of magical attacks on them only to run away again. ========= Sound ========= I don't have any major complaints about the soundtrack. While some of the tracks feel a bit generic or a little out of place. Most of the selections are used rather well. ========= Graphics ========= As I've mentioned before the manga-style cut scenes are rather nice to look at. The in-game sprites are also well done. There aren't any issues with the graphics in this little game. ========= Lasting Appeal ========= The game does offer a total of 12 teams to play as in vs mode which can be used in either free battle, survival, or challenge mode. Of course, to access survival or challenge mode you need to complete the story mode which can be cleared in less than an hour. Also, as you'd expect most of the teams aren't unlocked until you've gone through story mode, but a few teams aren't even unlocked if you clear story mode and require other methods of unlocking. The game also offers a few mini-games, but most of those have to be unlocked as well. And only one of them is unlocked through story mode. ========= Scores ========= Story: 8 Gameplay: 6 Sound: 7 Graphics: 9 Lasting Appeal: 8 Overall: 7.6 7/3/12
