Rated 4 out of 5 by from Digimon the Digital Monsters ========== Gameplay ========== The game plays a lot like the last game. You jump with the A button while attacking with the B button. The game does offer a few more additional special attacks as well. The game also allows you to digivolve after you've filled up a digivolution bar. To digivolve you simply press A + B when the bar is red. You can also unleash an ultimate move if you collect enough diamond shaped digimon spirit crystals by pressing A + B + /\ while close to your opponent. To win battles you still need to collect digimon spirit balls dropped by your opponent when you hit them. This makes the game largely focus on hit and run tactics since you need to gather the spirit balls rather quickly, since they disappear after a few seconds. The game does offer you the chance to collect spirit balls worth more than one point this time around. Though, knocking a higher costing spirit ball out of your opponent seems rather random at best. Of course, you can knock multiple higher cost balls out of your opponent with your ultimate attack. Though, the gameplay mechanics are changed up in the final boss battle. Since the final boss operates like an opponent in a normal fighting game and does have an actual health bar. Though, the game doesn't show your opponent's life bar so it's difficult to know how many hits you need to land in order to win. ========== Sound ========== Sound wise the game features an 8-bit soundtrack. Though, this may not be that big of a surprise since this game is a port from the Wonder Swan a handheld system only released in Japan. The soundtrack varies from slightly annoying to tolerable for the most part. Though, the use of 8-bit music can give the game a more retro feel. ========== Graphics ========== Graphically the game feels like a mismatch. The characters don't feel as detailed as the last game, but they aren't exactly ugly either. The battlegrounds tend to be colorful, but not as much as they were in the last game either. Though, several of the backgrounds have hidden digimon in the background. The game also features an annoying border at all times. ========== Lasting Appeal ========== This game features a few secret characters to unlock as well as a "digimon" shoot mini-game after you beat the final boss. Though, "digimon" shoot in my opinion is largely a waste of time. The game feels like a weird version of air hockey where the goal of the game is to knock all of the other pucks off the field. The game also features multiple difficulty levels and the final boss is a pain in the rear end to defeat. It took me over an hour on normal difficulty to finally defeat Kerpymon. This is mainly because Kerpymon is only open for attack for an extremely limited window and possess attacks that can easily eat way at half of your life-bar. And, when I did manage to win, I only had a second left on the clock. ========== Scores ========== Gameplay: 8 Sound: 7 Graphics: 7 Lasting Appeal: 8 Overall: 7.5
