Product Details:

The story takes place on an unknown planet in the not-too-distant future. On this world, a surge in crime involving dangerous, miniature robotic weapons known as Custom Robos occurs. Those that manipulate the Custom Robos are commonly called "Commanders," and through specialized training, they learn to manipulate the robots' actions through the use of brain waves.

One day, the hero and his comrades learn of an incredibly strong robot with autonomous maneuvering capabilities. In their search for a logical explanation regarding the existence of this powerful foe, the hero and his comrades uncover a secret about an event that occurred on this planet several hundred years ago ...

* Leap into a mechanized melee! Hone your skills in the single-player role-playing game as you progress through a deep sci-fi storyline.

* Make your own soldier! Customize robots by choosing from more than 200 different parts and weapons, then test their one-of-a-kind abilities against other robots in one of 30 battle arenas.

* See if your custom robot can survive the frantic, chaotic action of a four-player battle royale, two-on-two vs. Battle mode, or Tag-Team battle match!

* Battle it out with three other players on a single screen (rather than split-screen), and enjoy a great multi-player party experience. You can customize your own robot, then test its power in battle arenas against other players' robots.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A true Masterpiece The gameplay never gets old. The story blew my mind with all the crazy stuff that happens. And the characters range from deep, to hilarious. The soundtrack is amazing, from tecno insanity, to slow piano music. All of the characters, even the nameless ones are memorable. (Some of them complain that they don't have names!) There's even some RPG elements in there. Most of the choices are pointless, but offer different dialogue that will make you want to start all over just to hear it. The writing is spectacular. There's a part with a lengthy exposition dump, but because of the writing, music, and location, it's actually one of my favourite parts of the game. The graphics are really the only bad thing about this game. Though the robots look pretty nice, the character models are just meh. They do however have pictures next to their text box that let's you know what emotion they're emitting, and they're so good. I recommend this game to everyone, even if graphics are super important to you. Because this will probably be one of your fondest games ever.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Custom Robo Review ========= Story ========= The story itself feels rather standard, but the game does contain some interesting characters and plot elements. On the downside the pacing feels a bit weak since the game is so relatively short that the game can't deliver a proper build up and climax. ========= Gameplay ========= Gameplay wise this game uses a real-time combat system that has you and your opponent fight in arenas that are four meters squared. These arenas are littered with obstacles that offer cover as well as field traps. Sadly, the different arenas have a limited amount of impact on the parts you'll use in combat. Though, on the plus side the game focuses on several rules when it comes to combat and favors making good use of your pods, bombs, and guns to trap your opponent and dole out heavy amounts of damage. The game also makes all of the guns, pods, and bombs operate in different ways so you'll want to explore your options and get a feel for all of them. You'll also want to consider that some of the guns, bombs, and pods operate differently depending on if you launch them with your feet on the ground or up in the air. You'll also want to keep in mind the basics of combat if you want to complete this game. Another aspect to keep in mind is that the game allows for 2 on 2 battles and a few 3 on 1 battles during story mode. These battles can be highly chaotic and makes tracking were bombs and pods are at highly difficult. And, this brings up the only real flaw with the combat system in my opinion which is the camera. The camera stays back to get an overhead view, but when you are far away from your enemies or have a lot of characters on screen the camera can be so far back that it makes it difficult to see bombs and pods as they are being launched. This can put you at a serious disadvantage especially against some of the later enemies since they are highly resistant to damage but can dole out a massive amount of damage rather quickly. ========= Graphics ========= Graphically the game is a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand the robot models themselves look rather nice with each of the parts having a distinct look and feel, but on the other hand the characters lack any animation and the game copies several character models ad nauseum. Of course, to get around the character animations the game relies on pictures next to the text in order to dictate the emotions of those speaking. It's a commonly used technique in a lot of games and while it does work decently the massive amount of model copying in this game shows where all of the real effort went. ========= Sound ========= The soundtrack is alright. There isn't anything that truly stands out, but the selections felt appropriate for the atmosphere the game was going for at any given point in time. Though, sadly the game lacks any voice work and instead deploys a series of annoying beeps to indicate that people are talking. I guess, the best way to understand it is to think of how the adults speak in Charlie Brown and then multiply it by a factor of 10. ========= Lasting Appeal ========= After you beat the main story mode you unlock a few additional modes to play as well as an epilogue. You can also have a lot of fun with this game in the form of multi-player, but that requires finding someone to play with. You can also experiment with parts and part combinations to better hone your style as well as improve your chances at winning in multi-player. ========= Scores ========= Story: 9 Gameplay: 9 Graphics: 6 Sound: 8 Lasting Appeal: 9 Overall: 8.5

Rated 2 out of 5 by from So close While the models look good, the story itself is enjoyable, and there is good customizability for your Robo fighters, what drags this game down into the gutter are glaring technical issues. For starters, the character models are stuck on the same facial expression. The developers tried to make up for this with expressive portraits, but that only works when the majority of shots are top-down. Second, the characters have such limited animation that they can't even make fists. Lastly, the generic "beeps" and "hoops" for language gets easily annoying. This game had great potential, but NOISE squandered it away with glaring technical issues. My advice, forget about this game and get the far superior successor Custom Robo Arena.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun alone and better with friends! The gameplay is amazing and the graphics are unbelievable for the gamecube. The single player is fun for a pass time, but could be a lot longer. When you are playing with friends, there is a chance you will be playing for hours. This is a very addicting game. I give it a 10/10

Rated 4 out of 5 by from pretty good, I'd say the battles in this game are actually really fun even though they're short, you can customize your robots and unlock lots of new parts. however, without the battles, there is no freedom to explore, you have to go to certain points, the graphics aren't that great, and all you can do is run around. but, the robot battles are great, and that's what makes this game fun.
