It's called "Press Your Luck" for a reason!
When I bought this game from my local GameStop, I was hoping to get the same experience I got from watching the actual show back in the 80's. I am a HUGE fan of the ORIGINAL Press Your Luck (Don't get me started on "Whammy"), and I wanted to relive those days of watching people earn big bucks, only to have it taken away by the ever infamously popular Whammies!
Let's start with the pros: The game play works the same way. You start off in a questionnaire round answering 4 questions. If you buzz in with the correct answer, you get 3 spins, if you answer correctly otherwise, you get 1 spin. After 4 questions you go to the Big Board to spin for cash, prizes, and hopefully no Whammies. The nice thing is, if you land on a Whammy, they do provide some of the original Whammy animations as from the show such as the break dancing Whammy and the boxing Whammy. They also include some new ones such as a Vampire Whammy running from a swarm of bats, and a Matador Whammy getting hit from behind by a bull. Once the Big Board round is over, you do it all over again. They do bring back the original Big Board sound that everybody knows and loves, no generic version of it.
Now it's time for the cons: The theme song that plays in the game and the main menus is not the exact same as the show, rather a generic version thereof. It doesn't seem the same. During the game, the voice over for the host of the show at times sounds like it was faked. There could have been more Whammies in the game so that there were less chances to get the same Whammy animations. I think there was one game in which I saw the "Flava Flav" Whammy (A whammy with an old alarm clock around his neck) at least 3-4 times in the same game.
The biggest con in the game in my opinion is in the opponent AI when you are playing in Campaign Mode. By the time you get to the Big Board round, the opponents usually wind up doing the same old predictable thing: They will either spin once or twice (if at all), and then pass the rest of their spins to you, that is if they don't just pass them all to you all together. If you pass spins to them, they will take the spins until they hit either a Whammy, or get to any spins they have earned, and then pass them to another player right away. It's like these players have severe Whammy-phobia to the point like they don't even want to play! They will even pass their spins if they have NO MONEY! The name of the game is "Press Your Luck" for a reason. If they wanted players to play that way, they would have called the game "Pansy Pass: Pass Your Spins as Quickly as Possible!" It takes the fun out of the whole game.
All-in-all, there are some major things that need to be changed. Add some more Whammies, stick to the original music, and make sure the players who I wind up playing aren't just out of rehab from Whammy-phobia! When I game, I like challenges. The only challenge I find in this game is the questionnaires and not Whammying out.
