There are two multiplayer modes in New Super Mario Bros. -- Mario vs. Luigi and Minigames. In Mario vs. Luigi mode, it's brother vs. brother in a race for Stars. The goal of the game is to collect the Stars that appear throughout the stage at timed intervals. If your brother gets a Star first, don't worry. Any time you damage your bro, he'll drop one of his Stars and you can claim it for yourself. This mode is available for two players, and you only need one game card to play.
New Power Ups! You'll find classic power-ups like the Super Mushroom and the Fire Flower in the game, and there are some all-new power-ups that let Mario explore the Mushroom Kingdom like never before.
New Moves! New Super Mario Bros. expands Mario's arsenal of moves to include some very powerful advanced techniques. If you want to uncover every secret in the game, you'll have to master them all.
The Minigames mode offers a wide variety of simple touch-screen activities. You can challenge them solo, or use them as the basis of a minigame tournament for up to four players. The minigames may be simple, but they're surprisingly fun when you're putting your skills to the test against your friends.

If you're a Nintendo fan, particularly a Mario fan- you'll definitely find this game fun. It's not truly difficult, but great for something to do when you have your free time. I grew up with Super Mario Bros. so this was an absolute delight to play. It really brought the retro idea and made it work, but with a fresher appeal. A lot of things are the same- Mario and Luigi are playable of course, the goombas, koopa troopas, Toad, and Bowser's castle is all there, though they've managed to introduce some new things as well. Such as jumping up the walls, mini mushrooms, and mushrooms which make him seriously giant! The graphics really do add a lot to this game, it's a pretty gorgeous upgrade from the old Super Mario Bros games of fame. My only complaint is that at times, it's a bit difficult moving Mario, he seems to slide a bit, oddly. Besides that however, it truly is a nice game to have in your collection and I'd recommend it as a must for Nintendo and Mario lovers.

This game is perfect for: casual gamers

When New Super Mario Bros. first launched, it was like a gift from Nintendo to Mario fans! Not only was the first new 2D Mario game in years, but it was, and still is, a fantastic game in general! The worlds are very colorful with plenty of challengingly fun levels. There is also a great selection of mini games to choose from which can also do multiplayer. So if you are a Mario/ platforming fan or have a DS/ DSI, this is a MUST HAVE game!!!

This game is perfect for: casual gamers

The Mario bros. are back in an amazing plat former. This is just like all the classic mario bros. games but it has better graphics. This game is easy for awhile but thankfully towards the end it starts to get a lot harder. Its still not a very challenging game but it has its times. This is a very addicting and fun game overall and its very fun to fight your friends in multiplayer. This is a great must have game for any DS owner!

I have played every single super mario game made, wether it be way back to the original on the NES or Super Mario 3d land the newest eddition to the series and I must say this one is ranked #1 followed by sunshine at 2nd super mario bros 3 at 3rd and super mario 3d land at 4th and it is ranked this high for good reasons. The first reason is the outstanding gameplay. The gameplay fells like a classic, but yet it is new and different too. True it is not the hardest game, but it is challenging enough to keep even the most fanatic mario fans entertained. the game plays like the 2d classics, which is run and jump and use powers to get to the end of the level. The powerups are great and varied compared to other 2d entries. There are new enemies and classic ones too. now the boss battles are my favorite part. Each world has a diiferent boss that requires some strange way to defeat it, instead of just always there being koopalings. There are coins to collect in each level like new super mario bros wii and super mario 3d land. Now for the graphics they are pretty good and reflect the DS well especially if you have a DS lite. The music is new to the series but blends in and is just as good as older themes. As far as lasting appeal goes this game is a blast to the past and should easily last a pretty good amount of time. Also there are secret worlds to unlock and explore along with fun minigames at the title screen Now why number one you may ask? Because it accomplished what it was meant to do which is to re enstate 2d mario games to the new generation of gamers. while it certainly is the best game on the DS, it will go down to me as one of the greatest games of all time, so you should definetely buy it.

ThatNameIsAlreadyTaken

Almost, almost! A truly fun game, but falls short of being a classic. Let me explain why:

I admit I had fun playing this. No shame in saying that. It felt just like any other Mario game.

The level design is well-thought out and is fun to play through. The controls are as tight as ever, the gameplay is simple, and Mario is... well... still a plumber who doesn't clean out pipes or fixes toilets or charge you up the nose with his services and instead rescues a female monarch kidnapped by a gang of sentient mushrooms and flying turtles. Yep. That's just Nintendo being Nintendo. Anyway...

The legitimate complaints is have about this game is that it's too easy and perhaps it doesn't feel like a real sequel. I say it's too easy because it doesn't feel like I'm being challenged as a veteran Mario player. Not even at the very last level, did I feel challenged. The bosses are easy and it's obvious Nintendo didn't really put some thought into them. It would also appear that Nintendo was trying to aim towards the casual gamer because of the low difficulty. I don't mean to sound like an elitist, but a Mario game should at least be difficult in some areas that will make the players learn how to REALLY become a true gamer.

They obviously tried to combine the elements of Super Mario Bros. 3 (in terms of the multiple power-ups) and Super Mario World (with the ghost houses and the multiple secret exits), both of which are my absolute favorites, but they don't bring out the best of both, falling short altogether of what could've been the most awesome Mario sequel of all time. A real shame too.

Also, they wasted potential ideas for levels and other things as they don't use their new items enough. The Mega Mushroom in particular you won't be using often, which is a shame as that item was heavily promoted in marketing this game.

Also, there are no secret levels for experts. If you thought you could spend those Star Coins on courses that TRULY were challenging like how they had that "Special World" in Super Mario World, then your expectations are just too high. So enjoy the game while it lasts, because it all passes through like a breeze.

As for the mini-games, it's recycled from Super Mario 64 DS. They are about as addicting as those games that come prepackaged with Microsoft Windows. While simple and played out of sheer boredom, you don't want to stop playing them.

Overall, is a Mario sequel that stands up well among the classics, but doesn't rank as well as the Mario games that came before it. It doesn't fall flat, but nor does it surpass. It doesn't let itself be the culmination of many years of gaming tradition and doesn't demonstrate how far the Mario series came after all these years. In short, it's not exactly the best sequel, but it's fun regardless.
