Not The Best, But Not the Worst
I bought this while on a business trip, because I love cross word puzzles and word search games. The cross words are far too easy, and only after slogging through way too many of those do you get anywhere near challenging puzzles. The word search games are fun, even the easy ones. The large size word searches are more challenging in part because you have to scroll through the display rather than having all the letter grid showing on the screen at one time. I do not care for the anagram games. I think they would be better if you could opt out of a game earlier on (when your brain stops making new words from the selection of letters) and see what the answers are. I've not managed to finish one anagram game yet. I am a frequent business traveler, so I enjoy this game for those long flights or airport delays. The DS is small enough to fit in my purse and handier than carrying around a stack of puzzle magazines. I will look for a more challenging cross word puzzle game, however.
I just got this game the other day and it's pretty cool. It's a great game if you just want to relax or if you just have time to kill. There are over one thousand puzzles and there are three game modes. The three game modes are Crossword Puzzles, Word Searches, and Anagrams. The challenge is pretty tough for a lot of the puzzles, especially the anagrams. The next hardest game mode would be Crosswords, then Word Searches. The controls are simple. In Crosswords, to write a letter or word all you do is tap the letter box you want and write the letter. For Word Searches, all you do is drag the stylus from the beginning of the word to the end of the word. For Anagrams, you just use your stylus to slide a letter into the box to try and spell as many words as you can from a given set of letters. I would recommend this game to any puzzle for, or if you just a game to relax or kill time.
Best Puzzle Game Out
Crosswords for the DS is one of the best games I have ever played. I have never done anagrams before and when I bought this game I thought I would not be able to pick it up so quickly. The game itself is set up to make you think. I like the concept of using my stylus to play the entire game. The gameplay is easy when playing the easy mode but as you get into the other modes it becomes more challenging. The graphics are great and the audio is good also. The price of the game is ***** and that's not going to break anyone who enjoys doing puzzles. If you like a game that has all your favorite puzzles, and you are not one to get frustrated at figuring out CrossWords, Word Search or Anagrams, then I highly recommend this game for you to get. I am still playing this one and I will continue to play, until I figure out all the puzzles. Have Fun!
Fun if you're not a crossword junkie.
Okay, I really wanted to like CrossworDS; really, I did. What I don't like is that I am a crossword nerd, and I prefer the hard puzzles. With CrossworDS you have to unlock harder puzzles by doing A LOT of easier ones. Not just 1 or 10... but so many that I haven't even unlocked them yet because I find it a waste of my time (and I've done about 60-75 total of easy and medium). The easy ones are the kind of crosswords you find on your Lucky Charms box. I don't need an affirmation that I know useless words; I want a challenge. I prefer to have to think. The wordfinds are great when I'm feeling dumb or just don't feel like thinking, and I do like the anagrams. Point is, though, I would tell any serious crossword nerd to stay away from this game. It's dumbed down.
Got it... Great
This game is well worth tracking down. I just got it and I have to say, if you liked PIcross (and who didn't?) you will enjoy Crosswords DS. Well polished, challenging and yet not too easy. The interface is simple, buttons (on screen) respond well, handwriting recognition works great also. I haven't gotten New York Times Crosswords so I can't compare, but it was well worth the minor investment. You have four profiles that one can set up, for more than one person. The buttons and interface remind me of Mario VS DK interface, smooth, large and easily responsive. Along side of the choice of difficulties, there is a percentage reminder letting you know how far along the various levels you are. Upon choosing the difficulty level, you then have a choice between pages (1-10, each having buttons to choose one of 20 puzzles, and then a mystery option after that). You can skip ahead to any puzzle number, but must finish what you have started once you resume a save, not start another with one in save. Handwriting recognition has the same trouble that Brain Age 2 has, a minor flaw, in that it sees an 'i' as an 'L' unless you specifiy with an 'i' dot, instead of straight line, a minor difficulty at best. Navigation around the puzzle is much like Sudoku ala Brain Age. You can save a game mid progress, but must go back to the same one next time or lose progress though. The word find works great as well, lots of words per list, not just five or ten. Simple to choose the found words without mistakes. There is some pleasant music in the background, fairly repetative, but unnoticeable. Options offer you Delete Profile-Rename Profile, Set Orintation and Credits. It opens book style There are four levels, Easy. Medium, and the next two are unlockable. The HINT system is a bit convoluted though, reminds me of the one for Professor Layton and the Mysterioius Village, another really quality game. Just the same, I highly recommend the game, as I'm just hyper critical. Great product, you won't be sorry.Have Fun.
What an awesome time killer!
When I got this game I was worried it wouldn't have enough puzzles to satisfy, and I just hate those amazing, addicting, phenomenal games- that you beat in about an hour. This game is loaded with puzzles, literally thousands, and will keep you busy for a long while. It really is terrific for any traveling, with a sugar- sweet, addicting, modern twist on hand held gaming and classic puzzles. The only con in my opinion is that there are many easy puzzles to beat before you get to the challenging ones, but in a way this warms you up to the biggies. I've just started recently, and I am positive that once you've beaten this game you will be able to complete any crossword, anagram, or word search with ease. The game's controls are incredibly easy to maneuver with great crystal clear graphics, and a good, accurate written text- reader built in. I even lent this game to my neighbor, a big fan of shooter games, and he was addicted after a minute. This is really an awesome time killer- bring it to anywhere boring and time will fly. In my opinion this is really a must have for most DS owners. The bottom line is that this is a cool game that has everything- challenge (later in the game), graphics, sound, controls, and an overall cool appearance. It is a must have for any DS owner who is a fan of anti-games or just relaxed, puzzling fun. And another good thing about it is that even if you have never heard of a word search, anagram, or crossword puzzle, this game teaches you quickly and easily the controls and puzzle outline in tutorial mode before you jump in (and I can pretty much guarantee you won't want to come up for air) and rise up to the challenge. ?
