The original Nintendo DS system or "DS Phat" as most people like to call it, is surprisingly great for what it is worth. I bought mine from Gamestop in January 2013 and it is still fully functional. Now, I will admit that I was on the fence about getting an original model because I had never had or played one before and thought that it would be terrible. But to my delight, I actually liked it., The design is a bit bulky and isn't exactly pocket friendly, but it fits in my hands nicely and I can play it for hours without any kind of discomfort. The screens are very good for what they can offer. The screen is crisp and clear and I have no trouble in seeing what is going on on the screen when I am playing a game. Not only can you play Nintendo DS games but you can also play GBA games on it too thereby greaty expanding the library of titles that can be played on the DS. However, be aware that only the Original DS and DS Lite are backwards compatible with GBA games. Now, despite all of my praise for this model, I cannot say that I would recommend this model to a friend. Why? Because of the DS Lite. If someone was looking for a regular DS model but not a 3DS, Then I would recommend the DS lite because of it being superior in almost every way to the original model. I will admit that the only reason that I chose an original model was because at the time, I was low on cash and looking for a DS so I chose this one. But if I would have had enough money at the time, I would have gotten a DS lite instead.
