Rated 4 out of 5 by from Flawed But Adequate All systems have a flaw, mine can't use controllers besides the one it came with. Reordering won't help, some have even worse defects like not being able to play games from a particular system. It plays games well and in my opinion, outshines the competition with playing gba and game boy games. Overall, if your system has minor defects it works fine except a glitch or two.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Amazing Functionality, Horrible Quality Control The newer Retron 5's are a bit more sturdy than the earlier models, but the same problems are still present under the hood. We bought the system in mid-January and for the most part it worked with 95% of our library, and even the odd Super Famicom titles. Some carts had to be cleaned a couple additional times to be read, but that not uncommon with any emulation system. The real trouble started a week into ownership when the NES carts stopped being read. The same "Unknown Cartridge" error kept occurring. All the pins looked fine, and the other system slots were reading games with no problem. The following day, fewer and fewer Genesis and SNES carts were being recognized, with either above mentioned error or a new one about a ROM dump fail. We called tech support and they suggested a factory reset. After following the instructions, the system reset itself and all that came up was a blank white screen. The system was bricked and had to be sent off to be repaired.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 99.9% awesome! This machine DOES IT! It converts to HDMI perfectly with fine tuning options. The Save States feature is a must for those impossible moments when gaming on tougher game titles. The Cheats (which is the only update I needed to throw on a cheap SD card & plug into the RETRON) breathes new life into my old games. I have yet to see a title that I own not have Cheats built in...and that's with a collection of over 200 titles between 4 systems! The system came updated with the latest firmware which was nice and took some worry out of the doing it myself. The only issue I had was on restarting the system; The RETRON 5 imports that data when playing it for the 1st time. In this case, I was playing an RPG that I saved onto the game's battery and on a Save State. Then, I'd turn it off for the night after playing/saving. Then, I'd boot it back up the next day, and the RETRON gets stuck trying to import the save data again. Solution = take out the game cartridge, boot up, then plug it back in. Fixed. Lastly, I wish the controller wasn't so *click-y*. But that's a nit pick. Love it! BUY it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Be prepared First, I will start by saying that I am by no means considered an expert. This console can do amazing things. Its basically a retro video game hacking machine. The picture is great and if you ever have a problem with game play or audio or picture, there tons of settings you can tweak until its perfect for you and your TV. Worth its money when it works. And it will take you a moment to get to know the console. That being said, my journey of getting to know this machine had some hiccups. I crashed the thing the first time i turned it on. I decided to update the firmware before i ever attempted to play a game. Follow its instructions exactly, or you will have a bad time and maybe panic a little. Months pass and the NES, SNES and Genesis games are playing great. I went to play Tetris through the Gameboy slot and this is the first time Ive had a problem with the actual hardware. Luckily, their customer service has improved since i crashed the machine and they responded quickly with multiple solutions. Long story short, I have to send it to them so they can fix my console. I wouldn't have to do this, if Gamestop locations weren't constantly sold out of them so that i could do a simple exchange and let them figure it all out. Basically, If you simply want to play your old games, there are easier ways to go about it. If you are a full blown Retro gaming geek extraordinaire, you will think this console is the coolest thing ever. Im somewhere in between. It is really cool and everything... But I think its a really complicated piece of hardware for playing simple cartridge games. The laundry list of codes for each game reaches way beyond the old Game Genies and that adds some fun. This one is not for kids. Matter of fact, its not for some adults either. It is not a simple plug and play.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent The Retron 5 is awesome! HDMI supported and a wireless controller are two of the best features. No issues so far playing NES, SNES and Sega Genesis games.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I started collecting because of my Retron 5!! I have always been interested with video games and comics growing up but I am more of a casual fan. Last year while I was in Canada for work, I felt so bored and saw this retron console displayed at one of the stores I visited. It was The Retron3. I loved the system and I started buying SNES and Genesis games. Fast forward to today, I currently have 19 NES titles, 38 SNES titles and 29 Sega Genesis games. I thought I was becoming a hoarder but I relaized, I am starting to become a self proclaimed collector of video game cartidges!! lol A few months back, I saw The Retron 5 on Gamestop's site while I was browsing for Retro games. I bought it and I was surprised with all the added feature it has!! (compared to their older console they previously made, The Retron 3) The Retron 5 just brought Retro videogames into the next level!! No other company matched The Retron 5 today and I am sure the makers of it are cooking up some other cool products for years to come!! The only issue I had with it was the laaaaaaggggg of updating their firmware but I am so happy with the functionality, practicality and usefulness of this system. KUDOS to Hyperkin!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Instantly restored half of my games After 15 to 20 years, most of my old charts don't save anymore due to a dead internal battery. I was opening them and adding CMOS battery clips, but with this wonderful machine I don't have to. It works with save states just like an emulator. This helps avoid risky cartridge surgery if you don't know what you are doing, because you can save on the system's internal memory or an SD card. Done and done. The included wireless controller is ugly, but very functional. Just keep up with the system updates and you won't have a problem.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sega Genesis Games Freeze. Oh how I want to love my Retron5. I mean this thing is going to be awesome...when it actually works. So far, I have not been able to spend much time playing games, as the console tends to freeze after a few minutes of playing pretty much any Sega Genesis titles. NES games seem fine, Game Boy Advance games seem fine, haven't tried SNES yet, but Sega Genesis will freeze the system, cause a crash to the title screen, or just freeze and require a good ole fashioned...unplug it. So I do what any consumer would do, reach out to Hyperkin Customer Service. Get instructions on a lengthy install software update, force firmware update, cross fingers, do a dance, hope for the best....and if that doesn't work, good old factory reset. Cross fingers, pray, hope that works or ship the console back to Hyperkin for another console. See, console users by nature really don't want to spend countless hours on the computer, downloading updates to SD cards, updating software and firmware....if I wanted to waste my time doing that...I'd have purchased a PC to game on and run retro game emulators. We'll see how the "Cross your fingers and hope the problem is solved with Software and firmware updates". I really want to love this console.
