Tritton Ax Pro + 5.1 Surround Headset
Best 5.1 audio, very comfortable, and durable
The Tritton AX-PRO + has proven itself from the day I opened the box. This may take a while but I'll take some time to tell of my experience so far.
My headset had no damage or failing mic. The headset itself which has been re-styled is very comfortable and can support players with large heads unlike it's tight headache inducing predecessor the AX-PRO, also it is very durable and can withstand more abuse when compared to previous models. The cables are also higher quality all of which have a thicker jacket for increased durability such as the optic audio cable which is very sturdy and very flexible.
There are 3 points in which the ear cups are adjusted, the first is the rail slider which not only allows for extra length but it also moves the ear cups outward a bit due to the rail angle which offers a great deal of more comfort, the second is rotation cuff which allows you to rotate the ear cups to you can rest the headset around your neck and the cups will lay flat on your shoulders, the third is a vertical pivot on the ear cup mount which allows for extreme comfort when the headset is adjusted to fit different head sizes. The head set has some heft to it reflecting it's quality materials yet when worn it feels very light due to the design I can play for hours and forget it is there.
The sound is amazing, the new design has a changed layout for the 8 speakers (4 speakers each ear cup) the new layout makes it very easy to judge the direction of sound sources and the distance. The highs and lows are great and unlike the old AX-pro's game voices don't sound awkward to hear even when there are explosions rumbling your head through the dedicated subwoofer speakers. I threw in Battlefield 3 for the PS3 when I first got this headset and loaded a close quarters map in which I was blown away by the clarity of the sound, I was easily able to hear when an enemy was about to turn the corner ahead of me or sneak up behind me. The higher accuracy of the surround sound allowed me to pin point where enemies where before I could see them giving me a chance to open fire on doorways before the enemies even knew I was there making my Kill/Death ratio skyrocket. As for game volume you can fine tune the games sound from the inline controls by pressing a button for a specified channel and lowering or raising it's volume to make each of the 4 speaker pairs sound how you want.
Voice communication is always the first most important thing in a headset and this can be frustrating in most headsets where you find a lot of buzzing sounds or distortion in your friends voices when there are too many audio ques taking place. This Pro+ model uses a new style of mic that is easier to connect and disconnect, it is very flexible and your voice clarity is top notch, with Selective Voice Monitoring you can hear yourself with the press of a button so you know if your mic is working for one and if your being too loud for those around you. Your friends will also have a clarity that I found to be highly improved over previous models, unless your friends are to loud and you really don't want to hear them in which there are separate volume controls to lower voice volume or game volume on the in-line controller.
Connect to as PS3 or XBOX 360 using an optical audio cable for game sound which is gold plated, very flexible, and very durable.
For voice a Type A Male to Type B Male USB cable is used which is not gold plated but has a very durable jacket and is also very flexible.
For power unlike the Tritton AX-720's this unit has a wall plug which only has 1 jack compared to the older Tritton AX-Pro's which needed 2 jacks.
A word of warning on PC and Laptop Compatibility:
Right out of the box this model can only use the voice chat USB cable to connect to PC's and Laptops which does not support the surround option (unless you have an optical port on your soundcard) and also requires the use of the power plug and decoder box. A separate cable adapter which Tritton sells through gameshark.com will be needed to connect the headset's inline cable to PC's and Laptops directly without having to move the power plug and decoder box around constantly. The cable adapter has to be specific to this headset when purchasing and they retail for around $9.99. Spare parts such as ear pads and replacement mics are also available for purchase.
Could have been great
I really liked the headset comfortable a little tight for my head but good on the ears sound was nice very directional but when I first got the mute button light was broken not a big deal mute still worked, after 2 days of use the sound started cutting out, then the mic started going my friends all could hear a loud feedback everytime I spoke. If you get a set that has no flaws you will love it, up to you to risk it.
i am the first to write a review about how good this product actually is. It is also extremelly comfortable and hard to break
