- St. Mystere is brimming with hidden puzzles. Your investigation of the village and its inhabitants is crucial to helping you unravel the mystery at hand. Don't just talk to people, explore everything.
- Puzzles aren’t just for testing mental might...you'll need to solve them to progress through the adventure and acquire new items.
- At the start of each puzzle you'll read a brief description. The type of puzzle determines how you answer it. If you get stuck, you can try using a hint coin.
- Throughout the game, your curiosity may lead you into finding hint coins. If you come across a puzzle you cant figure out, simply spend a hint coin and you'll be given up to three hints that will help you solve your current conundrum.
- As the story advances, it's easy to overlook a hidden brainteaser, but worry not, for you can always visit Granny Riddleton's shack. Her odd hut automatically stores all the puzzles that you might have missed during your adventure.
- Every puzzle you encounter is recorded in your puzzle index for replay. Use the puzzle index to show puzzles you really enjoyed to family and friends. You can even customize your own favorites list!
- Even after you think you've played every puzzle Professor Layton has to offer, think again! Connect to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and you can download weekly puzzles unavailable within the story portion of the game.

What a treat it is to have no expectations for a game and then find you can't put it down for a week! I'm going to date myself a little here, but one of my favorite games from back in the 80's was a puzzle game called "Fools Errand." Professor Layton, while likely not directly derivative of that classic game, shares the concept of progressing through an entertaining story, via completion of dozens of seemingly unrelated puzzles. Both games excel at making you really work for it and feel brilliant at the same time.
The puzzles in Layton are very challenging, but the progressive hint system doles out help in small doses, so you still feel a sense of accomplishment even when "cheating" a little. While it might be too challenging for young kids (and many adults!) as a parent, it was fun to play this game with my 10 year old son; when he wasn't prying the DS out of my hands that is. ;)
